Salesforce Community Group Leader?

I am currently the leader of the Morristown, NJ Pardot User Group. We were getting ready to host our first ever meeting when Salesforce announced some exciting new changes to community groups. Once the details are ironed out, we’ll be off to the races. That might mean a marketing automation focused community group, or possibly joining a local admin group as a leader and incorporating Pardot specific content.

Favorite Salesforce Feature

I love analytics in Salesforce. There’s nothing like being able to take the data from the fields you worked hard to configure and summarize it to give your company valuable insights which yield actionable decisions to move the business forward!

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

I’d really like to see Pardot test environments available in Trailhead so users can get hands-on in their marketing automation learning journey – even if they’re not a Pardot customer. We all have to be #keepingupwiththepardashians, as @ifeellikemacmac would say! That hashtag cracks me up!

Fun Facts about me:

  1. I’m a mom to two AWESOME, smart, kind, and brave boys – John John, 9 and Brody, 5. Being a mom to my boys is filled with sports, adventures, sticky hands, endless laughs, and FUN!
  2. Metallica is my favorite band – and they played at Dreamforce this year! *raises the roof*
  3. I love autumn – crisp weather, leaves changing color, and FOOTBALL! I’m a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. The best part about being a Jersey girl, though, is that we get to experience all the seasons.
  4. I’m a former sales rep turned Salesforce admin/analyst. I fell in love with Salesforce as an end user, and it has really brought a unique empathy to my roles in sales operations. The skills you learn in sales can be applied to any role. I think everyone should work in sales at some point in their career.
  5. You’re very likely to see me wearing my favorite white sunglasses. I call them my Wendy Peffercorn glasses. Who doesn’t love the movie ‘The Sandlot’? It’s a classic.

Most Identifies With This Salesforce Mascot:

I LOVE Appy because girl power! Also, I’m a huge proponent of working smarter, not harder. When in doubt, AppExchange!

Omni-Channel Presence and Routing in Service Cloud! The routing and prioritization of cases make life easier for agents and keep SLA’s intact.

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

Getting more things out of classic and fully up and running in lightning. Knowledge is a prime example of a feature that would be incredible if so much of it didn’t get left in classic.

Fun Facts about me:

  1. I went back to college at 36 to try and earn my degree! I hope to graduate in 2020 or 2021
  2. My favorite book is John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, my favorite movie is O Brother Where Art Thou and my favorite band is the Old 97’s
  3. The writings and spoken word of Henry Rollins best known for being in the band Black Flag have been a huge influence on my life.
  4. My music tastes range from alt/texas/outlaw country to punk to trip-hop/downbeat.
  5. I just started my Salesforce career at 37 and it is my 3rd career path since I was 17. I spent almost 10 years in the Navy where I was a Persian linguist then 10 years in IT support.

Most Identifies With This Salesforce Mascot:

Flow! I can’t wait for the upcoming reboot, but to be honest, everything I can’t do with flow keeps sending me back to thinking about getting serious about learning to write, instead of just read, code.

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

I’m with SteveMo on this one. (https://success.salesforce.com/ideaView?id=0873A0000003aQvQAI) I wish Salesforce would cross some of the low-hanging fruit off their to-do list. I’m excited to see what’s behind Brett Taylor’s initiative lately in acknowledging the Idea Exchange is broken.

Fun Facts about me:

  1. I’m not an Accidental Admin. Everything happens for a reason. I’m a didn’t-know-where-I-was-going-but-hey-look-this-is-clicky Admin. Part of my senior art thesis in college was about how I was comfortable as a Semi-Luddite and a bit of a technophobe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  2. My partner and I run our home on Agile principles including a Kanban-style to-do board in the kitchen.
  3. My love for puppets is unparalleled. We named our son Henson…
  4. I’ve been homebrewing for about 10 years. I started out in an apartment, which is no small feat and I hope it gives me street cred. See the “Ales” in @ales_force.
  5. I used to be a trained caller for frog varieties of the NorthEastern Illinois region. No, I can no longer demonstrate.

Salesforce Community Group Leader?

Yes! I cofounded the Pittsburgh NonProfit User Group when I was the Director of a foundation at UPMC in Pittsburgh. I’m really proud of that group as we come up on our 3rd anniversary; we’ve had 30 events over the last 3 years, helped a lot of nonprofit admins along the way while also finding cool projects for PGH GiveCamp & helping about 10 people transition to full-time Salesforce careers.

Favorite Salesforce Feature

Right now I really love using Quick Actions w/ the Related Records Lightning Component. Creating conditional tabs & components with fields from the record is a really cool way to tailor user experiences without having to maintain several record types, page layouts, profiles, etc.

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

The Salesforce Talent Gap is getting worse instead of better. I wrote about it in detail here (https://theaccidentaladmins.com/the-salesforce-talent-gap) but in short; SF is growing rapidly in their push to $20B in revenue and in that growth there is a need for Salesforce to lead in developing the talent needed to support that customer volume. The lack of talent is great for us in the short term for projects, salaries, etc; but without taking steps to today to grow talent, I worry it could be an anchor on momentum for the industry in the near future.

Fun Facts about me:

  1. I’m 34 & have had the following jobs (usually more than one at a time): Landscaping, carnie, state park ticket taker, grocery bagger, hotel event staff, dorm info desk attendant, fundraising campaign caller, housing demolition crew, Dover Downs track concessions supervisor, Jake’s burger flipper, newspaper layout & pagination , CTP (computer to press) Operator, Substance Abuse Counselor (in-prison), Community Corrections counselor (probation), UW Campaign Associate, Clinical Supervisor, Therapeutic Support Staff, non-profit Program Manager, non-profit Director, State Rep Campaign Manager, SF Consultant, and now SF Practice Lead.
  2. I listen to a lot of music while working & theme my days. The last four days I’ve done the Salsa Nation Spotify list, Miles & Coltrane, 90’s Rap , and Americana (J.Roddy/Shakey Graves/Marcus King).
  3. My son is 3 & 1/2 and has been to 90+ Pittsburgh Pirates games. He also insists on playing baseball in our foyer, refers to the Pirates first basement, Josh Bell, as ‘Mr. DingDong’, and cries if the one of the Pierogies in the mascot race at games does not give him a high five.
  4. I’m a speed reader. I recently read a 7 book series in 10 days.
  5. I’ve made it a personal goal to stay in the top 15 in the Answer community for at least a year. 4 months to go!

Most Identifies With This Salesforce Mascot:

I’m a big fan of Codey, I like to think the creators were being punny with the name (Kodiak bear + Coding = Codey right?) plus my son Mathias likes him the most.

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

Given the future of the manufacturing industry and its commitment to IOT, Salesforce has a huge opportunity to provide a platform for capturing tremendous amounts of data and making smart AI driven decisions.

#DF18: Tips from the #GIFSquad

We have just over a month to go until #SalesforceOhana descends on San Francisco for a week of networking and learning at Dreamforce. Whether this is your 1st or 5th time attending the conference, the #GifSquad has put together some tips for you to make the most of your time.

Sessions

“It’s exciting to pack your days full of sessions, but really try to attend those core to what you want to learn, and make sure to leave time to attend fun sessions like #AwesomeAdmin Lip Sync Battle!” Amy

“Pace yourself. Schedule a few sessions you want to attend, areas you want to explore, things you want to do, but don’t forget to allow time to rest, recharge, and relax. There’s no shame in taking a mid-day nap in your hotel room.” Stacey

“Go with a goal in mind of what you want to learn and/or experience. Be extremely intentional in your session selection and strive to align with your organizations goals.” Justice

“Do AT LEAST one HoT (Hands On Training)! They are worth the entire conferenece IMO.” Melinda

“Start going thru the session listings NOW and bookmark them. When Agenda Builder goes live, it’s frenetic and you may miss out on getting a seat in a session you really wanted to see.” Amy

“Sessions are recorded and available. If you miss it, don’t worry.” Sam

Little things, big impact

“You can save a few bucks on food if you’re coming on your own budget. Find breakfasts and dinners being hosted, they’re everywhere.” Bill

“Bring some creature comforts to get you through the long week….Emergen-C, granola bars, your fav protein shake, comfy slippers.” Melinda

“Bring MULTIPLE phone chargets. The smaller & thinner the better. You dont want to lose a chance to take a selfie with folks you admire in the community.” Bill

“I know it’s been said many times, but wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking. Alot. And standing. And you don’t want to miss a chance encounter with someone on your “must meet” list because you had to head back to your room early. Bonus tip: I also carry bandaids just in case my comfy shoes wear a blister.” Stacey

“Remember self-care. This is a large conference and it can get overwhelming for many people. Know your limits, and make yourself a priority.” Amy

Networking

“Try to arrive or stay at least one day after the conference. San Francisco has some amazing sites to see, and your chances of finding another #SalesforceOhana member to link up with is much higher during Dreamforce!” Amy

“I do a lot of networking at Dreamforce. That’s because going into Dreamforce I have a lot of questions. Questions for Salesforce product owners and managers, questions for vendors that I work with (or may work with in the future), questions for my peers who know products better than I do who I don’t see often. I will make a quick list of these and try to reach out to these people prior to Dreamforce to see if we can make a meetup during the week. (5 to 10 min talk?). We may not solve my question, but give context for a later discussion 2 or 3 weeks later. This is a great place to have a 1:1 with a product expert, Salesforce leader or a peer having the same issues as you!” Stuart

“You’ll be tired….just own it. Go to the happy hours and the parties, you’ll be sad if you missed a chance to hang, in real life, with the people you admire in our community.” Melinda

“You can sleep when you’re dead. See ALL the people!” Bill

“Make a list of #SalesforceOhana you want to meet prior to the big event, and reach out to them in someway prior to the conference to set up to let them know you’d like to meet!” Amy

“Be open to networking with new people in new spaces. This is a conference eclipsing 150,000+ attendees in one area. Step out of your comfort zone and attend events and meetups.” Justice

“If it’s your first Dreamforce, you’re going to be overwhelmed, and none of this advise is really going to resonate until you’re there. Don’t sweat it. Your second year will be better. And different.” Sam

#SWAG

“Swag. I love swag. I think i have an addiction. It could be a problem. I was like a swag whisperer in 2016. I would get tips from other attendees on where they got the best swag and I would go seek it out. I would enter in contests and talk my way into winning. I just was clicking on all cylinders. Don’t be like me. Let it go. Don’t get sucked in by swag. You can have a good Dreamforce without swag. It’s ok. That being said, I wonder where the best swag will be this year and I am sure there will be some chatter posting about where to find good swag.” Stuart

“Bring a fabric duffel bag that will rollup nicely into your carry-on for your trip out west. Fill it with swag for the ride home. I didnt wind up using mine last year, but it fit nicely in my bag anyway and didnt take up room so it worked out.” Bill

We want to hear from YOU! Tweet us your #Dreamforce18Tip!

See you in San Francisco, friends!

Salesforce Community Group Leader?

Not a Leader, just an attendee. My favourite event so far has been Surf force on the west coast of Ireland and I am looking forward to NewVoiceMedia hosting the Hampshire User Group on 4th July

Favorite Salesforce Feature

For me its a classic – Quick Actions.

To give users the ability to do whatever they need to do from the top of the page whilst still being able to see all the information about their customer was and is a game changer.

I think for experienced Salesforce users its so natural we forget what a big deal it is, but when I am working with people who are new to Salesforce they are amazed by the ease of use and power of the quick actions.

Salesforce’s Biggest Opportunity for Improvement

As a declarative admin, for me, the biggest opportunity for improvement is with Process Builder. It’s something that I use a lot and is incredibly powerful but troubleshooting can be difficult.

Fun Facts about me:

  1. I am teaching myself to cook and when im in the kitchen I am usually listening to podcasts such as the Salesforce Admins Podcast or audio books like Mythos about the classic Greek myths.
  2. Since starting work at NewVoiceMedia 4 years ago I have visited customers in over 20 countries and on 3 continents. Not bad for someone who had never been on a plane before.
  3. I am a big fan of car karaoke and when driving to and from visits to my customers. My playlist currently includes some classic motown, 80’s rock and some modern pop
  4. I collect maps of everywhere I visit, towns and cities around the UK or further afield. I have a map for pretty much every place I havs stayed in.
  5. I have a pet rescue duck who lives amongst the chickens at home.
